BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India, China) held its first summit in Yekaterinburg, Russia in June 2009. South Africa joined in 2010, officially making it BRICS. The group has since expanded in 2024 to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates.
The New Development Bank (NDB), formerly known as the BRICS Development Bank, is a multilateral development bank established by the BRICS nations. It was officially established in 2014 and began operations in 2016. The NDB finances sustainable infrastructure and development projects in BRICS and other emerging market countries.
The BRICS chairship rotates annually among member nations, following the BRICS alphabetical order. The chair country is responsible for organizing and hosting BRICS meetings, ministerial sessions, and the annual summit, as well as setting the thematic priorities for the year.
